Income test
Assets test
Result
This is an estimate, not a determination. Only Services Australia can decide your entitlement. See the methodology and sources for exactly how this is calculated and what it leaves out.
What this calculator does not model
- Transitional-rate pensioners. If you were on a part pension at 19 September 2009 you may be on transitional rates, which use different rates and a different taper. This calculator uses standard rates only.
- Rent Assistance, which raises every cut-off.
- The Work Bonus income bank — only the fortnightly amount is applied, not accrued balance.
- Gifting and deprivation, compensation preclusion, and income streams with special asset-test treatment.
- Residence and qualification rules — it assumes you already qualify.
Common questions
Which test decides my pension?
Services Australia applies both the income test and the assets test, and pays whichever produces the lower pension. The calculator shows both reductions and tells you which one is binding — which is usually the more useful piece of information, because it tells you which lever actually moves your entitlement.
What is deeming?
Rather than assessing what your financial assets actually earn, Centrelink assumes a set rate of return. The first portion of your financial assets is deemed to earn the lower rate and the balance the upper rate. If your investments earn more than the deemed rate, the extra is not counted as income.
Do I include my home?
No. Your principal home is exempt from the assets test if you own it — but being a homeowner gives you a lower assets free area than a non-homeowner. Both effects are handled by the homeowner question above.
Should I include my superannuation?
Once you reach Age Pension age, super is counted as a financial asset and is deemed — so include it in financial assets. Before that age, a partner's super may be treated differently.
How accurate is this?
The rates and thresholds are taken from Services Australia and the ATO, and are verified and dated — see the methodology page. The arithmetic is checked against the published cut-off points, which the calculator reproduces exactly. It is still an estimate: it cannot see your full circumstances, and only Services Australia can determine your entitlement.
Is anything I enter saved or sent to iAdvice?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted, stored or emailed. We record only anonymous usage — that the calculator was used, and a broad asset band — never the figures you type.
Want to know what to actually do about it?
A calculator tells you where you stand today. Whether restructuring assets, timing a claim, or a different drawdown strategy would improve your position is a conversation — and it is the one we have every day.
