Rollovers requested to or from an SMSF from 31 March 2021 must follow the SuperStream rules, with exceptions including in specie rollovers, transfers from foreign funds and spouse contribution splitting. An SMSF needs an active electronic service address and a messaging provider that supports rollovers, and non-compliance is a regulation 6.17 contravention auditors must report.
Moving money into or out of a self-managed super fund (SMSF) is no longer a matter of a cheque and a form. SMSF rollovers have to run through SuperStream, the electronic standard, and a fund that doesn't follow the rules commits a contravention its auditor has to report. This article sets out what the ATO says about the electronic service address (ESA), which rollovers are exempt, and the evidence auditors look for. It is based on ATO pages last updated 2 April 2025 and the ATO's compliance audit page last updated 3 August 2026, read on 16 October 2026.
What the ATO requires
The ATO says that superannuation law requires trustee compliance with the SuperStream rollover rules for rollovers requested to and from an SMSF from 31 March 2021. Certain exceptions apply, including:
- in specie rollovers
- transfers from foreign super funds
- rollovers from splitting contributions with a spouse.
Regulation 6.17 of the SISR is the contravention hook. The ATO's contravention reporting page says an auditor must report a contravention if a rollover is requested from 1 October 2021, the SMSF does not comply with the rules in Division 6.5 of the SISR when it makes or receives a rollover (or attempted rollover), and the ACR reporting criteria are met. Those criteria include reporting where contraventions exceed 5% of the fund's total assets or $30,000, or where a breach is repeated or hasn't been rectified; see our article on when your auditor reports to the ATO. See our article on what the SMSF auditor checks.
The electronic service address (ESA)
To receive contributions and make rollovers into or out of your SMSF you need an ESA, which the ATO describes as "a specific internet address, different to an email address". You can get one through an SMSF messaging provider or your SMSF professional. The ATO's advice: if you need rollovers to or from the fund, choose a provider that offers rollover services, because some do not. An ESA works only while you are subscribed with the provider, and ESAs can expire, so make sure yours stays active.
You must notify the ATO of your ESA. The ATO says that without it the fund can't receive employer contributions, process rollovers in and out, or receive electronic release authorities. Members who receive employer contributions also need to give their employer the SMSF's ABN and BSB and bank account number.
What the auditor looks for
The ATO tells auditors they need sufficient, appropriate audit evidence of compliance with Division 6.5. Where the SMSF is the transferring fund, that includes a copy of the member's rollover request, a printout of the "initiate rollover request" message from the receiving fund's messaging provider, the bank and transaction details, a printout of the "rollover transaction request" message from the transferring fund's messaging provider, and a payment reference number. The SMSF must provide the rollover information, including the payment reference number, to the receiving fund on the same day the rollover is made and make sure the payment and information match (regulation 6.34B).
Where the SMSF is the receiving fund, the auditor looks for evidence that the SMSF used SuperStream to request the rollover from the transferring fund where the member asked the SMSF directly to do so (regulation 6.33A), and that it received the rollover information through its messaging provider and the payment electronically (regulation 6.34C).
Practical steps for trustees
- Check that your ESA is active and that the ATO has your current ESA details.
- Confirm your messaging provider handles rollovers, not just contributions.
- Keep the rollover messages and payment reference numbers with the fund's records; see SMSF record-keeping.
- Remember a rollover is not a free pass: benefits must be paid only where a condition of release is met; see illegal early access.
- When consolidating several accounts, see our article on super rollover and consolidation, and for contributions received see accepting contributions.
Worked example
Illustrative only, not personal advice.
Priya, 63, is a trustee of an SMSF with her husband and wants to roll $90,000 from an industry fund into it. She gives the industry fund the SMSF's details, but the SMSF's ESA with its messaging provider lapsed a year ago and nobody renewed it, and the provider she used doesn't offer rollover services. The rollover can't proceed electronically until the trustees sort out an active ESA with a provider that supports rollovers and update the ATO. When the auditor reviews the fund, a rollover that was attempted outside the SuperStream rules would be assessed against Division 6.5, so Priya keeps the messages and payment reference numbers once the rollover is completed correctly.

Frequently asked questions
Does an SMSF need an electronic service address?
Yes. The ATO says you need an ESA to receive contributions and to make or receive rollovers, and you must notify the ATO of it. It is an internet address, different to an email address.
Which SMSF rollovers are exempt from SuperStream?
The ATO lists in specie rollovers, transfers from foreign super funds and rollovers from splitting contributions with a spouse, among certain exceptions.
What happens if an SMSF doesn't follow the SuperStream rollover rules?
It is a contravention of regulation 6.17 of the SISR for rollovers requested from 1 October 2021, which the auditor must report if the reporting criteria are met.
Can an ESA expire?
Yes. The ATO says an ESA works only while you are subscribed with the SMSF messaging provider and can expire, so make sure it remains active.
